April 2018 - Dinosaur Poetry

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Dinosaur Poetry Description: K-1 student artists learned the difference between an author and an illustrator.  A poem, "My Dinosaur", by David L. Harrison was read.  Each student chose one line in the poem to illustrate.  Crayon was used to outline the dinosaur themselves and additional details.  Next, watercolor painting was introduced.  Last, salt was applied to the wet dinosaurs resulting in a mottled and rough texture.  Vocabulary:  author illustrator poem texture curtsy extinct Resources: Danny and the Dinosaur  by Syd Hoff How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?  by J ane Yolen and Mark Teague Materials: crayon watercolor salt Examples of Student Artwork:

March 2018 - Painting Primary/Secondary Bubbles

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Painting Primary/Secondary Bubbles Description: K-1 student artists painted bubbles.  The objective was to overlap yellow and blue, yellow and red, and red and blue bubbles for the purposes of demonstrating color mixing of secondary colors. Once dry, water color crayons were used to fill in each bubble.  The overlapped bubbles reveal our color mixed orange, purple and green! February 2018 - Mobiles

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Mobiles    Description: Mobiles are kinetic sculptures that spin in space.  Kindergarten and 1st grade artists chose an animal to be the focal point for their mobiles.  Paint markers were used to create our animals and a repeated pattern was selected for our rims.  Students realized the importance of making their mobiles special on all sides because they are 3-dimensional and are meant to be viewed on all sides. January 2018 - Snow people

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Snow people   Description: The focus of our snow people project was "texture".  Students sponged bumpy snow people bodies.  Next they used brushes to paint their smooth blanket of snow.  Felt fabric, buttons and oil pastels were additional textures added to complete our snow people.  Each is unique! December 2017 - Robots

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Robots Description: Grade K-1 artists brainstormed how robots are used in today's world; in space, in humor, in factories.  Next, the concept of 3-dimensional was explored.  Students understand that their robots would be viewed from all sides.  Construction of our wood robots followed.  It was a very exciting art experience! November 2017 - Fall Motif

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Fall Motif Description: Falling leaves in our courtyard inspired this printing project.  Four cookie cutter shapes were used to stamp a well developed composition.  Two colors of tempera were added within each shape.  Artists noticed that the crayon texture was strong enough to push the paint away; crayon resist! October 2017 - Printing Shapes

Kindergarten and 1 st  Grade Project Title:   Printing and Shapes Description: K-1 students identified the difference between geometric and freeform sponge shapes.  They practiced stamping these shapes into primary and secondary colored paint while developing a composition of their choice.  Next, colored pencils were used to add details and form, and geometric shapes were added for fun.
